The grain surface or specific surface area increases significantly in grain mixtures at the lower mesh sizes of a sieve analysis (< 125 µm grain diameter). An evaluation of the sieve analysis only with the percentages of each grain class does not really reflect the changes in the surface fractions of the grain classes.
